Many graduate program candidates walked in the all-university Commencement ceremony at the Danforth Campus, as well as separate recognition ceremonies for their individual programs.

All-University Commencement
Graduating students from all Washington University schools and programs proceeded into Brookings Quadrangle early Friday morning for the university’s 153rd Commencement ceremony.
In an inspiring address, Baseball Hall of Famer Tony La Russa asked graduates to focus on “respect, trust and care” in working with others: “Act in a way in which you earn your own respect,” he advised. “Care about what you represent and what you think of you. And then you translate this to the people that you work with.”
MD Commencement Recognition Ceremony
Dr. Lisa Moscoso, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, presented candidates of the Doctor of Medicine programs with their diplomas at the America’s Center in downtown St. Louis.
Keynote speaker Dr. Mark McClellan, a senior fellow and director of the Health Care Innovation and Value Initiative at the Brookings Institute, challenged graduates to use their passion to meet the unprecedented challenges rising to face medical professionals. School of Medicine Dean Larry Shapiro, MD, urged the graduating class to also hold onto the sense of wonder and idealism that led them through medical school.
Program in Occupational Therapy Diploma Ceremony
Six members of the OT Class of 1964 celebrated with dozens of graduate candidates in the master’s and doctoral OT programs at Graham Chapel on the Danforth Campus. Keynote speaker Glen Gillen, EdD, associate professor of clinical occupational therapy at Columbia University addressed the graduates.
Program in Audiology & Communication Sciences Recognition Ceremony & Diploma Distribution
Graduates of the Master of Science in Deaf Education, Doctor of Audiology and PhD programs received their diplomas at the Program in Audiology & Communication Sciences (PACS) recognition ceremony.
Individual accolades included the Max A. Goldstein Award, conferred on Jenna Voss, PhD candidate in Speech and Hearing Sciences, which honors the founder of the Central Institute for the Deaf. It is the highest honor awarded to students by the program. Dr. William W. Clark, professor of otolaryngology and PACS directory, addressed the graduates.
Graduate School of Arts & Sciences Hooding & Recognition Ceremony
Graduates of the Division in Biology and Biomedical Sciences (DBBS) gathered for their doctoral hooding at the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences ceremony at 560 Music Center on the Danforth Campus. Dr. Diana Chapman, president emerita of Wellesley College, addressed the graduates.
Joint Recognition Ceremony: Clinical Investigation, Population Health Sciences, and Applied Behavior Research
Scholars graduating from the Master of Science in Clinical Investigation, Master of Science in Applied Health Behavior Research and Master of Population Health Sciences programs were recognized at a joint ceremony for degrees awarded by the Clinical Research Training Center.
Graduates of the Master of Population Health Sciences, a program in which clinicians develop advanced clinical research skills, included three attending physicians – the highest number in a graduating class at Washington University.
Program in Physical Therapy Diploma Distribution & Hooding Ceremony
Keynote speaker Dr. Ellen Spake of Rockhurst University addressed the nearly 100 PT doctoral candidates receiving their diploma at the Program in Physical Therapy hooding ceremony. Dr. Susan S. Deusinger left graduates with one last lesson at her final ceremony before retiring as Director of the Program in Physical Therapy: “Make waves for the future; be the movement for change.”
