Brian Edelson, MD, PhD

Dr. Edelson is an MD/PhD graduate of Washington University School of Medicine and completed his residency in Clinical Pathology at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and Immunology, Division of Laboratory and Genomic Medicine and became Course Director of the first-year Immunology course in 2016. His lab studies how T cells mediate autoimmunity in a mouse model of multiple sclerosis, and how tissue-resident macrophages self-renew and function. Dr. Edelson has received three Distinguished Service Teaching Awards and received an award from the Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr. Foundation in 2013.

Dr. Edelson’s nominator states, “Dr. Brian Edelson is a dedicated educator who greatly enhances the preclinical experience for medical students at Washington University through his service as course [director] for the first-year immunology course… I enjoyed the course so much that I want to pursue my PhD in the field of Immunology.” Dr. Edelson strives to incorporate effective teaching strategies and
focuses on connecting concepts throughout the course.

Dr. Charles Eby, Department Chair for Pathology and Immunology states that his “conversations with Brian…have enlightened me to how committed he has been to updating the content of the syllabus, assuring the quality of lecturers, increasing his teaching and lecturing time, improving the laboratory experiences, writing exam questions which [are] challenging and instructive, and making himself available to students.
