Barbara A. Lutey, MD

Barbara A. Lutey, MD, assistant professor of medicine, is honored for her exceptional dedication to community service.

As an internist and pulmonologist, Lutey is a dedicated caregiver to uninsured patients in St. Louis and the surrounding area through the Pulmonary Clinic at the Center for Outpatient Health, and the Grace Hill Murphy-O’Fallon Health Center.

For the past decade, Lutey has also contributed personal time to the Cathedral Conference St. Vincent De Paul society, a group which visits the poor in their homes and provides food, clothing, rent and utility assistance.

As an educator, Lutey has leveraged her influence and expertise for the community’s benefit. Her passion for helping the underserved has led her to develop a resident rotation designed to educate physician trainees about challenges facing the poor in their daily lives. During this course, medical residents go out into the community and visit agencies that assist victims of domestic abuse, the homeless, the mentally ill and others. This highly successful rotation has received excellent reviews, helping to improve the cultural sensitivity of trainees and to foster their commitment to serving the community.

Lutey acts as mentor and supervisor for Washington University medical students at the Saturday Neighborhood Clinic, a free service for the uninsured staffed by physicians from the School of Medicine. She is also active at Casa de Salud, which serves Hispanic immigrants.

Lutey received her bachelor’s degree in 1982 and master of library science in 1983 from Indiana University and worked as a reference librarian at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) prior to earning her medical degree at the University of Iowa in 1999. She completed her postgraduate training at Washington University and joined the faculty in 2009.
