October 20, 2017

Georges C. Benjamin, MD, a highly regarded health administrator and former secretary of health for Maryland, will speak at the upcoming 22nd annual Homer G. Phillips Health Lecture Series at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. The title of his talk is “Marshaling a Public Health Response to Trauma and Traumatic Stress.”

Benjamin

The lecture will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, at the Eric P. Newman Education Center, 320 S. Euclid Ave., on the Medical Campus.

Alive and Well STL, a community-wide effort focused on reducing the impact of stress and trauma on health and well-being, also will be honored at the lecture.

Since 2002, Benjamin has served as the executive director of the American Public Health Association, the nation’s oldest and largest organization of public health professionals. He is board-certified in internal medicine, a master of the American College of Physicians, and a member of the National Academy of Medicine.

This public health lecture series is named in honor of the historic Homer G. Phillips Hospital in St. Louis, formerly a premier training ground for African-American medical professionals. The hospital closed Aug. 17, 1979. The building now houses the Homer G. Phillips Senior Living Community.

A reception and dinner, which will begin at 6 p.m., will precede the lecture.

The event is free and open to the public, but participants are asked to preregister by Wednesday, Oct. 25. To register, contact the Office of Diversity Programs at 314-362-6854 or medschooldiversity@wusm.wustl.edu.

Parking will be available in the Metro Garage and the North Garage, across the street from the Center for Advanced Medicine. To avoid garage parking fees, please bring parking cards to be the lobby to be validated.
