Special sessions to address aftermath of Charlottesville

The Human Resources Office of Diversity and Inclusion at Washington University School of Medicine is hosting a special series of Perspectives sessions to provide members of our community opportunities to reflect on recent events in Charlottesville, Va. The sessions will provide space to discuss these events and what they mean for us as an institution that “strives to enhance the lives and livelihoods of students, the people of the greater St. Louis community, the country and the world.”
Sessions will be held on the Medical, Danforth and West campuses. The full schedule is listed below.

The Aftermath of Charlottesville: A Call to Conversation
The Diversity and Inclusion team encourages staff and faculty to attend one of the sessions and bring a colleague with you. Leaders, please encourage your team members to attend a session as well. You are welcome to bring food. No RSVP needed.

The ongoing Perspectives Dialogues series provides opportunities for our community to reflect on and discuss topics around diversity, inclusion and equity in constructive ways. Through facilitated open dialogue, participants practice perspective taking and sharing and build empathy and connection within our community.
Upcoming sessions in the ongoing Perspectives series are Reflections on St. Louis Post Michael Brown, Neighborhood and Social Inequality, Supporting our Trans Community, and Invisible Disabilities in the Workplace. These sessions will be held on the medical campus and are open to all Washington University staff and faculty.
In addition to the Perspectives Dialogues, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion offers training sessions for employees and managers. Trainings include a four-part series on the fundamentals of diversity education, as well as unconscious bias training for managers. Washington University will open the academic year with a universitywide gathering to reflect upon recent events, consider our individual and collective roles in the community, and celebrate our shared, core values. Speakers will include students, faculty, staff and leadership. A musical performance by medical students Jimmy He and Vincent Peng will be featured in the program.
“Reflections: Unity, Social Justice and Peace” will be held in Graham Chapel on Wednesday, Aug. 30, at 4 p.m. Doors open at 3:30 p.m.
