Radiation oncologist honored for contributions to field

Aadel A. Chaudhuri, MD, PhD, an assistant professor of radiation oncology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, will receive the 2022 Michael Fry Research Award from the Radiation Research Society (RRS). The award recognizes one junior scientist annually who has made outstanding contributions to the field of radiation research.
Chaudhuri treats lung cancer patients and leads a lab focused on developing liquid biopsies that can help inform treatment of various tumor types, including cancers of the lung, skin, bladder, prostate, colon, head and neck, and peripheral nerves. Such liquid biopsies measure cancer cell DNA circulating in the bloodstream to determine whether residual disease remains after initial treatment, indicating whether a cancer is likely to return. His team also is working to develop a liquid biopsy that can predict severe toxicity to immune checkpoint inhibitors. Such inhibitors commonly are used to treat melanoma and lung cancer.
Chaudhuri will receive his award and deliver the Michael Fry Award Lecture at the RRS annual meeting, scheduled for October in Hawaii.
