Joseph Pangelinan, PhD, has been named director of cultural awareness and diversity in the Department of Medicine.

Pangelinan, an assistant professor of medicine, will lead strategic planning, direction and activities involving diversity and inclusion in the department. He will work closely with Victoria J. Fraser, MD, the Adolphus Busch Professor and head of the Department of Medicine, to develop new diversity programs and initiatives to foster a welcoming environment for faculty and staff from all backgrounds. He will work with senior leadership to assist with training and recruitment efforts, professional development, and education for faculty, staff and trainees regarding diversity, unconscious bias and cultural awareness.

Pangelinan is a licensed professional counselor certified in crisis prevention and intervention. He comes to the university from the Logos School, where he had served in multiple roles, beginning in 2002.

“Joe has a substantial history of positively dealing with complex socioeconomic issues within diverse populations, and possesses remarkable insight into the complexities and history of race, gender and diversity at our medical center,” Fraser said. “He has a sophisticated understanding of the nuts and bolts of diversity training and recognizes an institution as complex as Washington University does not respond to a one-size-fits-all approach to training. He has the passion, foresight, maturity and decisiveness to make a major impact in the Department of Medicine and at Washington University.”
