Guilak receives award from Osteoarthritis Research Society

Honor recognizes advancement in basic research in the field

Farshid Guilak, PhD, a professor of orthopaedic surgery at Washington University School of Medicine and director of research at Shriners Hospitals for Children-St. Louis, has received the Basic Science Research Award from the Osteoarthritis Research Society International.

The award recognizes advancement in basic research in the field of osteoarthritis that has been conducted within the last five years. Guilak’s research focuses on the biomechanical factors that contribute to the onset and progression of osteoarthritis, with an eye toward development of new drugs and stem cell therapies for the disease He received the award March 31 at the annual meeting of the Osteoarthritis Research Society International in Amsterdam.

Guilak is co-director of the Washington University Center of Regenerative Medicine and also is a professor of biomedical engineering and of developmental biology.

He is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Biomechanics and associate editor of Osteoarthritis and Cartilage.
