Medical Campus to host Diversity Week

Theme for the week is 'Be Aware of Your Unaware'

The initiative, in its third year at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, now is open to all members of the Washington University Medical Campus.

Washington University School of Medicine will join other members of the Medical Campus in participating in Diversity Week 2018, from Monday, Sept. 10, through Friday, Sept, 14. The first Medical Campus-wide Diversity Week is a collaboration between the School of Medicine, Barnes-Jewish Hospital, BJC HealthCare, St. Louis College of Pharmacy (STLCOP), St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College.

The initiative is in its third year at Barnes-Jewish Hospital but is now open to all members of the Washington University Medical Campus.

The theme for the week is “Be Aware of Your Unaware.” Dorothy Roberts, JD, a social justice advocate and a professor of law and sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, will deliver the keynote address Thursday, Sept. 13. Her talk is titled “Mistreating Racial Health Inequities: Racism, Unconscious Bias and the Need for Structural Competency.”

Among other events scheduled for the week, David H. Perlmutter, MD, executive vice chancellor for medical affairs and the George and Carol Bauer Dean of the School of Medicine, will represent the school at a campus leaders panel discussion Tuesday, Sept. 11.

Here is the schedule of events for the week:

Monday, Sept. 10, noon-1 p.m.
Bethany Johnson-Javois, CEO of Integrated Health Network, and Heidi Miller, MD, consultant at Integrated Health Network, will give a talk titled “Health Equity and Ecosystems: Stretching Beyond the False Finish Lines of Diversity and Health Disparities.” Eric P. Newman Education Center (EPNEC) auditorium, 320 S. Euclid Ave.

Tuesday, Sept. 11, 12:30-1:30 p.m.
Campus leaders panel discussion titled “How Addressing Bias Contributes to Diversity and Inclusion and Organizational Values.” Panelists are Bob Cannon, BJH president and BJC group president; Nancy Ridenour, Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College president and the Maxine Clark and Bob Fox Dean and Professor; David H. Perlmutter, MD, executive vice chancellor for medical affairs and the George and Carol Bauer Dean of the School of Medicine; Bruce Canaday, PharmD, STLCOP dean; and Joan Magruder, SLCH president and BJC group president. Wednesday, Sept. 12, noon-1 p.m.
Arthur M. Lucas Lecture, led by Lisa Lehmann, MD, PhD, and titled “Moral Distress in Health Care: How to Speak up and Give Voice to Your Values.” EPNEC auditorium.

Thursday, Sept. 13

• 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Friday, Sept. 14, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
Diversity Fair. Ellen S. Clark Hope Plaza on the Medical Campus. Representatives from local organizations and from within the Medical Campus community will share information on diversity-related efforts.

Registration is recommended for all events but is required only for the Sept. 14 screening of “The Color of Medicine — Homer G. Phillips Hospital.”
