Medical school selected by hematology society to develop fellowship program

Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis is one of nine U.S. academic institutions selected by the American Society of Hematology for the organization’s Hematology-Focused Fellowship Training Program (HFFTP) – an innovative initiative aimed at addressing the critical need to expand the number of hematologists. The society has invested $19 million to launch the new fellowship tracks, which will provide critical education, mentorship and research opportunities for fellows interested in pursuing careers in classical hematology.
Each institution will receive funding from the society to develop a robust hematology training experience for up to two new fellows a year over five years to produce 50 new academic hematologists by 2030. The first group of 10 hematology fellows will begin in July 2023.
The School of Medicine’s new hematology fellowship training is being led by Sana Saif Ur Rehman, MD, assistant professor of medicine, and Saiama N. Waqar, MBBS, associate professor of medicine.
