Mullen to participate in NCI surgeon-scientist program
Will train with other surgeon-scientists with aim of furthering work in cancer research

Maggie Mullen, MD, an assistant professor of obstetrics & gynecology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been selected to participate in the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) 2023 Early-Stage Surgeon Scientist Program Cohort of Surgeon Scientists.
The program is designed to train surgeon scientists and to further their careers in cancer research by supporting a focus on cancer-related disease, and basic and translational research.
Mullen, a gynecologic oncologist who treats patients at Siteman Cancer Center at Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, will be a part of a cohort of surgeon-scientists who will train together and receive research-related support for up to three years. The pilot program and its funding aim to help boost the number of physicians pursuing scientific research — a number that has fallen in recent years.
