Obituary: Stuart Weiss, 85, clinical professor of neurology
Remembering a beloved professor and superb clinician
Stuart Weiss, MD, a beloved, longtime professor of clinical neurology at Washington University School of Medicine, died Oct. 27, 2015, in St. Louis. He was 85.
Dr. Weiss was born in St. Louis and earned his bachelor’s and medical degrees at Washington University in 1950 and 1954, respectively. He completed his neurology residency at what was then Barnes Hospital and a fellowship at New York Presbyterian-Columbia University Medical Center.
Following his fellowship, Dr. Weiss returned to the Gateway City and began seeing patients at St. Louis City Hospital. He then worked in private practice but ran the neurology service at St. Louis Children’s Hospital for several years. For the past 51 years, he practiced neurology at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and was a professor of clinical neurology at the School of Medicine.
He received several honors from the hospital and the university, among them the Alumni Faculty Award in 1994 and, in 2002, the Medical Staff Association Appreciation Award and the Dr. Neville Grant Award for Clinical Excellence.
“He was the consummate gentleman and a superb clinician who contributed greatly to the education of countless students and residents,” said David Holtzman, MD, head of the Department of Neurology at the School of Medicine. “Stuart Weiss will be greatly missed.”
Dr. Weiss is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marlita Wennerman Weiss; his children Dr. Lori (Bradford Wainer) Weiss, Michael (Diane) Weiss and Debra Weiss; his brother, Gerald (Virginia) Weiss; and several grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Oct. 29 at Congregation Temple Israel. Additionally, the Department of Neurology at the School of Medicine has planned a memorial service for 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, in Connor Auditorium at the Farrell Learning and Teaching Center on the Medical Campus.
