Powderly named president of Infectious Disease Society
Will emphasize prevention, public health programs, translational research

William G. Powderly, MD, co-director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been named president of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, a research, education and advocacy group based in Arlington, Va.
Powderly, the J. William Campbell Professor of Medicine, the Larry J. Shapiro Director of the university’s Institute for Public Health and a longtime fellow of the organization, began his term Nov. 1. Founded in 1964, the group represents over 10,000 physicians, scientists and other health-care professionals.
“It is important to promote research in infectious diseases and HIV transmission and the clinical translation of that research while also highlighting growing issues regarding antimicrobial resistance,” said Powderly, who also treats patients at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. “As president, it is also critical to be an advocate for funding of prevention and public health programs in infectious diseases and HIV.”
