Tsai named a 2023 Pew Scholar in Biomedical Sciences
Grant will support research on embryo development

Tony Tsai, MD, PhD, an assistant professor of developmental biology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been named a 2023 Pew Scholar in the Biomedical Sciences. He is one of 22 early-career researchers in the biomedical sciences to receive the honor.
The four-year grant will fund Tsai’s investigation into how the cells in an embryo sense their local environment and neighboring cells to make decisions about their developmental fate. His research may inform treatments for developmental disorders.
This year’s Pew Scholars were selected from 188 nominations. The program funds junior faculty spearheading innovative research with the potential to advance human health.
“From vaccine development to treatments for complex diseases, biomedical research is foundational to solving some of the world’s greatest health challenges,” said Susan K. Urahn, president and CEO of the Pew Charitable Trusts, in a statement announcing the scholars. “Pew is thrilled to welcome this new class of researchers and support their efforts to advance scientific knowledge and improve human health.”
