The physicians of Illinois Oncology Ltd. in Swansea, Ill., are joining the faculty of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. The physicians from this highly regarded medical oncology practice treat patients with cancer and will continue to provide care at the same location.

The doctors are: William J. Popovic, MD; Alfred O. Greco, MD; Guillermo Rodriguez Jr., MD; and John L. Visconti, DO. They will begin practicing Feb. 1 as part of Washington University Physicians, the School of Medicine’s faculty practice and Washington University Physicians in Illinois Inc., an affiliate of Washington University responsible for providing clinical care in Illinois.

“These physicians are longstanding and widely respected members of the Metro East and Southern Illinois community and are known for providing exceptional patient care,” said John DiPersio, MD, PhD, chief of the Division of Oncology and the Virginia E. and Sam J. Golman Professor of Oncology at the School of Medicine. “We are pleased to welcome them to Washington University and our Division of Oncology.”

Popovic established the practice in 1988 and will become the School of Medicine’s medical director at the clinic, located at 4000 N. Illinois Lane, Suite C. Nurses and staff members at the Swansea clinic also will become Washington University employees and will begin working with Washington University physicians to provide care to patients from the Metro East and Southern Illinois.

“We are happy to continue providing top-tier care for patients in Southern Illinois and beyond,” Popovic said. “We also look forward to doing so as part of a leading academic medical center.”

The doctors’ transition to Washington University Physicians is another step toward development of a Siteman Cancer Center facility at Memorial Hospital East in nearby Shiloh, Ill. The hospital has filed paperwork with the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board, which must approve the construction or expansion of health-care facilities in the state.

“Everywhere Washington University physicians practice, we aim to provide the very best care to patients,” said James P. Crane, MD, associate vice chancellor for special projects at the School of Medicine. “With the welcome addition of these four oncologists, we’re pleased to expand our clinical care into Metro East and Southern Illinois.”

Illinois Oncology Ltd. patients who have questions about their care should call the clinic at 618-233-8000. Beginning Feb. 1, new patients and referring physicians can make appointments by calling 800-647-2098 toll-free.

Washington University School of Medicine‘s 2,100 employed and volunteer faculty physicians also are the medical staff of Barnes-Jewish and St. Louis Children’s hospitals. The School of Medicine is one of the leading medical research, teaching and patient-care institutions in the nation, currently ranked seventh in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Through its affiliations with Barnes-Jewish and St. Louis Children’s hospitals, the School of Medicine is linked to BJC HealthCare.
